Pre-Canon/Flashbacks

1840 to 1864 – Damon was born in Mystic Falls, VA. He was the oldest of two boys, though his father rather obviously preferred his younger brother, Stefan, due to Damon’s reckless and impulsive behavior and follow-your-heart attitude. Still, Stefan and Damon were very close growing up, despite their six year age difference. Damon joined the Confederate Army at some point, though he later deserted, presumably to spend more time with Katherine Pierce, whom he fell deeply in love with.

In 1864, it was discovered by their father that Katherine was a vampire, though Stefan and Damon worked together to try to save her from being burned with the rest of the town vampires. Instead, they were shot and killed by their father, and rose from the dead as transitioning vampires the next day, having both consumed Katherine’s blood.

Stefan tempted Damon with human blood, who wanted to remain human and die, thinking that Katherine was also dead (when in reality she had faked her death to avoid Klaus). Damon then promised to make an eternity of suffering for Stefan (whom he now supposedly hated due to Katherine loving them both and him accidentally getting her ‘killed.’)

1912 – This if the first time the brothers see one another after their transition to vampires. While attempting to reconcile over a drink, Damon meets Sage, who teaches him how to enjoy the hunt and the act of drinking blood. Damon tries to get Stefan involved, which reignited his blood addiction, returning him to Ripper status. Stefan runs away, and Damon doesn’t follow him.

1942 – Damon turns a woman named Charlotte, who ends up sired to him. After killing 12 humans to attempt to get a witch to break the sire bond unsuccessfully, he abandons her to count every brick in a building. During this same period of time, he runs into Lexi and Stefan, who is doing well again and is intending to join the war in an attempt to ease some of his guilt. After an evening drinking and talking, Damon decides he might want to go with him, only to be confronted by Lexi, who believes that Damon is nothing but a bad influence on his younger brother.

Damon lets Stefan leave without explaining why he doesn’t show up for the train.

1952 to 1958 – Damon is captured by Jospeh Salvatore and Dr. Whitman and experimented on for five years for the sake of the Augustine society, who wanted to find a way to use their blood and abilities to benefit themselves. He was referred to as prisoner 21051.

While in lockup, Damon bonds with his cellmate, Enzo, who had been there even longer. Together they concoct and escape plan where Enzo starves for a year and Damon has double his share of blood so that he can build up his strength for the next time they are caged at the yearly Augustine research findings party. Damon successfully escapes, killing nearly everyone at the party, but can’t manage to free Enzo from his vervain poisoned cage. In order to save himself, Damon turns off his humanity and leaves his friend behind for dead in the midst of the building burning down.

1977 – Presumably, Damon’s humanity never returned for decades, as it is still off when we see him in the 70’s.

Lexi shows up, claiming that Stefan had heard about his destructive club murder lifestyle and was worried about him. She spends a good deal of time with him in New York, attempting to get him to turn his humanity back on by making him feel something. Instead, Damon simply tricks her into believing he’s done that very thing by claiming he has feelings for her, and they hook up. Damon then leaves her on the roof of the bar, trapped by the sun until nightfall.

Canon

Season 1 – Damon arrives in Mystic Falls and proceeds to antagonize his brother as well as threaten his love interest, Elena Gilbert, whom shockingly looks exactly like the former love of his life, Katherine Pierce. In the process of being a giant asshole around town, Damon kills many of the locals, compels, uses and feeds on Caroline Forbes, turns Vicki Donovan into a vampire, murders Stefan’s best friend Lexi to cover his own ass (and his guilt for being a dick to her in the 70’s), among other various hideous acts of violence.

His true intentions are revealed to be more emotional in nature – he wants to get Katherine Pierce out of the tomb that traps her. Instead of the vampires being burned back in 1864, they were trapped beneath the church, and Damon intends to use some witches and magic to get her out.
While he is successful in opening the tomb, when he goes inside he discovers that Katherine was never there. She fakes her dead and entrapment for what appears to be unknown reasons at the time, and Anna (whose mother was trapped in the tomb) reveals that Katherine has been around all along and never cared that Damon was alive.

By this point, Damon has proven that he is capable of emotion, though they tend to lead to destructive tendencies most of the time, even when used for a good cause. He’s grown particularly attached to Elena, which perturbs Stefan quite frequently, even though he appreciates the help protecting her. He also is slowly developing ‘friendships’ with Liz Forbes and Alaric Saltzman.

Unfortunately, it is revealed that Ric’s wife, Isobel, was killed and turned into a vampire by Damon previously. She, as well as Elena’s Uncle John, both end up in town, and are trying to gain control of the Gilbert Device. It is also discovered later that these two are Elena’s biological parents, and Damon is the one that has to tell her that John is her father. Isobel also tells Elena that Damon’s in love with her, which doesn’t particularly surprise anyone. Stefan is even somewhat accepting of it, because he knows that means Damon will protect her.
In the finale, John uses the Gilbert Device, which reveals supernatural creatures by emitting painful sound waves that only affect them. They are able to round up the majority of the vampires in town, including Damon, who is played with others in a basement which is then set on fire. Stefan and Bonnie save his life, though they are too late to save Anna from being staked.

After talking to Jeremy and talking to him about Anna and apologizing for Vicki, he meets Elena out on the porch and they share a kiss. It is revealed moments later that it wasn’t Elena at all, but Katherine that he spoke with and kissed on the porch.

Season 2 – The seasons opens with Caroline in the hospital and Damon curious about the fact that the Lockwoods were affected by the Gilbert device but weren’t vampires. He gives Caroline his blood to help heal her injuries. Before leaving, Elena claims that she never kissed Damon, and they’re quick to discover Katherine’s presence after talking to Stefan, who had gotten in a fight with her.

Katherine continues to stir up trouble, and Damon is devastated after a conversation with her where she admits she never loved him. He gets drunk and goes to Elena’s, where he tries to kiss her and make her admit that she feels something for him, which she denies, saying it will always be Stefan. Broken and angry, he snaps Jeremy’s neck, who returns to life due to wearing the Gilbert family ring.

Trying to ignore his problems, Damon turns to dealing with the Council and uncovering the Lockwood family secret. He also tries to convince everyone that killing the newly turned Caroline (another piece of Katherine’s handiwork) is the best course of action. Obviously, no one agrees with this, and Elena has to stop him when he tries to take matters into his own hands. Stefan eventually takes it upon himself to teach her the ropes and control.
Eventually, they discover that the Lockwoods are a family of werewolves, which only activate their werewolf gene if they take a life. They also start trying to learn more and doppelgangers and what that means for Elena.

Mason and Damon start antagonizing each other, as Damon tries to get him to admit what he is and Mason tries to expose his vampirism. Damon and Stefan are both shot with wooden bullets and captured, and it’s Caroline who has to save them, revealing herself to be a vampire as well. He then refuses to kill Liz, instead locking her up til the vervain is out of her system and compelling her to forget.

The latter half of this season involved more werewolves and Stefan, Damon, and Elena dealing with Tyler becoming a werewolf himself, Katherine looking for something called the Moonstone (who finds it and ends up locked in the tomb), and a group of werewolves versus the vampires trying to break the sun and moon curse, which prevents vampires from going into the sun and werewolves forced to change at the full moon. It’s also then that they learn about Klaus, though the full extent of who he is and what he wants remains a mystery for a while; all they know is from what a vampire named Rose tells them, that he is extremely powerful and old and that he is after Elena Gilbert.

Elena is captured by Elijah with Rose’s help, who hopes to get out of Klaus’ debt so that she doesn’t have to continue to run from him. Stefan and Damon manage to stake him and free Elena, though Elijah doesn’t remain desiccated and comes back to life.

Though Damon is suspicious of Rose originally, they eventually become as close as Damon can really get to friends. They also sleep together, though it is shown to be mostly for the purpose of fun instead of romance. After a group of werewolves come into town looking for Mason (who Damon killed), she is bitten by one of them on the full moon, and Damon has to watch her slowly go mad and grow more and more ill. He eventually has to stake her to put her out of her misery, and we see him cry in the aftermath.

John Gilbert comes back into town, this time to help them save Elena. They discover what the Original vampires are, and that they can be ‘killed’ with a dagger dipped in white oak ash. They also discover that Katherine wants to deal with Klaus as much as they do, and they start an uneasy alliance. Isobel also eventually joins the fight against Klaus, as does Elijah, who apparently hates his brother for murdering their entire family.

Klaus arrives, but he does so by taking possession of Alaric’s body. He threatens many people in this way, including Aunt Jenna, who eventually finds out about vampires. Elijah reveals that the sun and moon curse was fake, and that the whole spell is really to be used to awaken Klaus’ werewolf side, which would make him a werewolf/vampire hybrid. It requires the moonstone, the lives of one of each species, and the blood of the doppelganger, which is why he wants Elena so badly.

Elijah claims that he has an elixir that will bring Elena back to life after the spell is finished, but Damon refuses this idea, instead forcing Elena to drink his blood so that if they can’t save her, she’ll come back a vampire. Immediately regretting this decision, he does what he can to prevent Klaus from being able to break the curse, but is unsuccessful, and also gets bitten by a werewolf. He is relieved when John Gilbert gives his life to bring Elena back human after Klaus is able to completely the spell and drains Elena of her blood.

Damon immediately starts to deteriorate, and Stefan has to make a deal with Klaus to save him. Elena spends a great deal of time with him, telling him that she likes him for who he is and comforting him. Katherine delivers the only cure, Klaus’ blood, and they find out that Stefan had to leave town with the hybrid in exchange.

Season 3 - The first portion of season 3 is devoted to Damon working with Elena to find Stefan and potentially save him from Klaus. He’s been returned to being a Ripper and is murdering people all along the coast as Klaus searches for werewolves to turn into hybrids.

Unfortunately, once he does find some, he discovers that they don’t survive without another ingredient, which turns out to be doppelganger blood. Klaus returns to Mystic Falls with Stefan in tow, along with his sister Rebekah, who’d he’d kept daggered with the rest of his family in coffins. Katherine informs Damon of a vampire hunter that can kill Originals, but that hunter turns out to be Daddy Original himself, Mikael. While Damon is traveling out of town, further explain below, Klaus uses Elena’s blood to turn Tyler into a hybrid and tries to get Stefan to hurt Elena as well. When he resists the compulsion, Klaus forces him to turn off his emotions completely. He compels a nurse to take bags of Elena’s blood, and once Damon returns home, he rescues her from the hospital and taunts Klaus that Mikael is coming.

Damon works with Mikael to try and kill Klaus with a white oak stake, but when Stefan learns that doing so will get his brother killed by Klaus’ hybrids, he prevents it from happening, saving Damon and getting Mikael killed instead. It is then that Damon realizes Stefan’s humanity is back. Unfortuantely, Stefan’s prevailing emotion is a vengeful one for Klaus taking everything from him, and Stefan steals the rest of Klaus’ coffins, putting Klaus in a losing position, which makes Damon and Elena very vulnerable.

They find out that Klaus’ mother, Esther, and the Original Witch, is in the mysterious extra coffin. Damon also releases Elijah from his coffin, who in turn starts releasing the rest of his family. Damon assumes that they, along with their mother, will deal with Klaus themselves.

Damon tries to prevent a meeting between Esther and Elena, but is stopped by Stefan, who breaks his neck. Though Esther told her children she wanted them to be a family, she really wants to correct the mistake of transforming them and killing them all. She is unsuccessful in this plan, however, thwarted by Klaus, Rebekah, Elijah and Kol.

With the help of Sage, Damon discovers from Rebekah’s mind that the white oak stakes were made from the tree that was used in the spell, and they find that Wickery bridge was made of this wood. Rebekah destroys the bridge, but not the sign, which is made of the same wood. They fashion stakes from it, and Finn is killed with one. This is when they discover that killing an Original kills their entire line of vampires, as Sage dies soon afterward.

They are forced to give up the rest of the stakes, except for one, which Alaric claims he can’t find due to his increasing blackouts. According to Esther, they find out that Alaric has a darker side that’s been brought out by his numerous deaths via the Gilbert ring, and that she’s been manipulating him. She uses Elena’s blood to turn him into a vampire as strong as her children, though tied to Elena’s life so that he can’t live forever, and fashions a white oak stake that can’t be destroyed. His darker side takes over after he feeds on Bonnie to complete the transition, and goes after the Originals.

Damon knows that he and his friends need to stop him, or else they’ll be killed as well, but they are unsuccessful. He stakes Klaus in front of Damon and Rebekah, and Damon has Rebekah run away and fights Ric himself. Rebekah stands in the road so that Elena and Matt drive off Wickery Bridge, and Elena drowns, and Alaric dies with her in Damon’s arm. It’s on his drive back to Mystic Falls that Damon’s brought into the game.

Personality:

Before becoming a vampire, Damon was a very different person. He was best friends with his younger brother, Stefan, and though he tried his best to do well by the family name, his father was ashamed of him and his difficulty with responsibility and his inability to take things very seriously. His brother was always the favorite, and while with many siblings that might create a rift, that was not the case with the Salvatore brothers.

Even as a human, Damon was somewhat unreliable. He joined the Confederate army, but couldn’t commit to it properly, and became something of a deserter. He also fell in love with the same woman his brother had fallen for, one Katherine Pierce, and he loved her with an intensity that was unrivaled. Through Katherine, the dark side of his personality shone through, watching her feed on innocent humans with very little fear, and drinking her blood when it was offered.

These are things he carried with him after his death at the hands of his father and his subsequent transition to a vampire, one that he would not have completed if it had not been forced on him by his brother, who couldn’t let him go.

Most people’s first impression of Damon is not the greatest one. He comes off as egotistical, arrogant, selfish and destructive. And while he is, in part, all of these things, a lot of it is a façade, a mask he wears to hide what’s beneath.

Damon uses sarcasm as a tool, wielding it in conversation, and his words are often meaningless to the casual acquaintance. He doesn’t take very much seriously, preferring to joke and make light of difficult things rather than have a meaningful conversation. He speaks of himself incredibly highly frequently, speaking as if he’s one of the greatest things to ever walk this earth, and he often gives others belittling nicknames. He can be frustrating, to say the least, and he’ll tell you that he doesn’t give a crap.

For the most part, he doesn’t. Damon can and will feed or kill on an unsuspecting human without a second thought, especially if they or someone else give him even the smallest reason to do so. He’s accepted what he is, unlike his brother who fights his predatory existence with every fiber of his being. Frankly, there isn’t very much that Damon Salvatore cares about, probably because he’s spent most of his supernatural life with his emotions turned off.

That’s because when he does feel, when he is around those things that he really does actually care about, is when he starts to run into trouble. He’s spent so much time alone and expecting to stay that way forever that he pushes away the people he cares about to a disturbing level. At the first sign of trouble, he’ll often sabotage himself, doing things he knows people will hate him for because for Damon, it’s easier to be hated than to be relied upon. He’s constantly afraid of disappointing people that he does it on purpose to keep it in his control.
However, he’s been doing much better with this more negative part of his personality, and hasn’t snapped too terribly in quite awhile.

His brother is numero uno in Damon’s world. Good luck getting him to admit it, but Stefan is easily the most important thing in his life. Damon knows that he has an eternity ahead of him, and for as incredibly alone as he is, it will be the honest truth if Stefan were to ever die. He talks a big game, about how his only goal is to make Stefan suffer, but he’s had plenty of opportunities to both do it and kill him, and he’s never done it.

Because he can’t and he won’t. He’d rather die himself. And when he’s around his brother, those pesky emotions of his tend to turn on as well.

Katherine used to be one of those important people, though he later discovered that ,not only was she never locked in a tomb as he’d believed since he’d died, but she’d deliberately stayed away, and had likely never loved him in the first place. After spending so many decades working to free her, this news was devastating, and his love for her has been twisted inside him into something much more akin to hate.

Elena Gilbert, Katherine’s doppelganger, has eclipsed nearly everything else in his life other than his brother. For whatever he felt for Katherine, what he feels for Elena is so much stronger, to the point where he actually even cares about the lives of her friends. He’s willing to die for her, suffer for her, and while he rarely listens to what anyone else ever has to say, helistens to her and does what she asks of him FAR more often than any other person in his life. Unlike Stefan, though, he will go against her wishes if he thinks it’ll keep her alive, which they’ve previously gotten in fights about. He’d rather she hate him than live in a world where she doesn’t exist.

Because Elena is a good person, and he isn’t. He accepted that a long time ago.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:

Damon is a vampire, which gives him the following supernatural abilities.

-Super Strength

-Super Speed

-Super Agility

-Heightened Senses

-Humanity Switch: Vampires emotions have been heightened, and sometimes become too much to bear. When this happens, a vampire may switch off their emotions, making them incapable of feeling them. Because of this, it is sometimes difficult to get them to switch them back on.
-Dream Manipulation: If the target is asleep, a vampire can modify the person’s dream to be whatever they like. The person receiving the dream may be lucid or not. This works on supernaturals as well as humans.

-Mind Compulsion: Unless the target is wearing or has consumed vervain, a vampire can compel them to do anything they ask. This includes hurting others or themselves, removing memories, and following instructions in the future. Vampires can only compel humans, not each other.
-Immortality: Unless killed, a vampire will live forever and never age.

-Supernatural Healing: Vampires can only be killed via wooden stake through the heart, heart removal from the chest, sunlight, fire, werewolf bite, or decapitation. All other wounds can be healed completely and without scarring, including a broken neck (which will incapacitate them for a few hours).

-Weather Manipulation: Early in canon, Damon is shown to magically create fog in order to confuse his victims.

-Animal Compulsion: Early in canon, Damon uses a crow to spy on Elena, and later drains it’s blood, and then never uses the ability again. It’s likely that all vampires can do this, though it isn’t proven.

As a vampire, he also possesses the following weaknesses:

-Decapitation: causes permanent death.

-Heart Extraction: causes permanent death.

-Wood: a stake or similar object made of wood with cause permanent death if it penetrates the heart.

-Fire and Sunlight: a vampire will easily burn up into ash with either, though a daylight ring will prevent the former.

-Vervain: an herb that is poisonous to vampires. It won’t kill one, but it will burn the skin, weaken them considerably if ingested, and prevent compulsion when worn or ingested by the target.

-In order to enter a home owned by someone other than a vampire, the vampire must first be invited inside. Otherwise, they are barred entry by an invisible force at the threshold.
-If the vampire does not consume blood for an extended period of time, they will dessicate into a state where they cannot move or function until fed.

-Werewolf bite: This causes severe fever, intense hallucinations, and eventual death in vampires. The only cure is the blood of the hybrid, Klaus.

Power Limitations:

Both weather manipulation and animal compulsion haven’t been used in the series since the very beginning of the show, and will frankly never be used in a roleplaying setting. They’re simply listed for completion’s sake.

Damon’s supernatural strength, speed, agility, senses and healing will be cut in half.

If necessary, I can have his compulsion be temporary instead of permanent, though I’d prefer not to. I rarely use it in game for ooc reasons, and would always ask for permission beforehand.

Inventory:

1 dark button-up shirt
1 black wife beater tank top
1 pairs of dark wash jeans
1 pair of black boots
1 leather jacket
1 lapis lazuli Salvatore family ring
1 cell phone

Appearance: Damon Salvatore is played by Ian Somerhalder.

Damon stands around 5’9” and it slim but athletically built. His dark brown, nearly black, hair is usually messily styled and hangs just over his ears. He has a light complexion and incredibly bright blue eyes. Most would consider him very handsome, though he gives off a near constant bad boy persona with his sly smiles and his waggling eyebrows.

He usually dresses in dark colors and is often seen with his leather jacket. He cleans up well when it suits him, wearing well-tailored suits/tuxedos and taming his hair. He often uses his hands to gesture when he speaks, and his facial expressions are often very animated.

He also constantly wears his family ring, a large piece of jewelry with his first initial and the Salvatore crest, along with a blue lapis lazuli stone. It’s charmed to allow him to walk in sunlight.

Age: ~170 years, appears to be in his mid-20’s

Log Sample:

Damon so wasn’t in the mood for this.

Last night had been the absolute worst night he’d had in a good long while, maybe even his entire life. He’d spent countless years trying to figure out how to get to her, to free Katherine from that tomb, to have the happy ending that everyone else seemed to be able to find but him.

Only to have it ripped away, to watch it disintegrate in front of his eyes. Not only was she not in the tomb, but she’d known exactly where he was the entire time, and she hadn’t cared. Not enough to come back to him, or even to tell him that she was there.

How many times was he not going to matter?

His head was spinning as he pushed himself to his feet, hand rising to rest his palm against his forehead, eyes squinting as he took in his surroundings. He’d drank himself into a stupor, but even being blackout drunk wouldn’t create this kind of hallucination, that much was for damn sure.

There was a voice behind him, polite and calm, but he didn’t hear the words. All he knew was that he was somewhere he wasn’t supposed to be, and this idiot thought he was going to give a crap about whatever it was he had to say. Well, Damon wasn’t exactly a morning person, especially not on this particular day.

He whirled around, faster than the blink of an eye, and he closed the distance in an instant, his hand reached out to grasp the stranger’s throat, fingers squeezing until he knew it would be painful, airway constricted.

“You have exactly five seconds to tell me what the hell is going on. Or I could break your neck. Your choice.”

It didn’t matter that the man was already going to answer that exact question without prompting. Damon was simply in the mood for violence, the one way he felt like he had control over his life right now. A way to direct all the negative emotions he was feeling. His fingers squeezed a little tighter and he waited for his answer.

(ooc note: this is from an earlier canon point, but it’s still accurate to how he reacts to things all the time.)

Comms Sample:

Apparently hybrid originals and back from the dead witches weren’t enough, now we’ve moved on to alien abductions.

[He sounds so very, very, very not amused.]

And on top of it all, your timing couldn’t possibly be better.

[Driving to go look at the unmoving corpse of the girl you loved wasn’t high on his list of things he’d wanted to do today, but not showing up at all? That was worse.]

I really could have done without the whole tube shoved down my throat thing, though.

[He uses his sarcasm like a shield. It’s easier than dealing with the sheer amount of pain he’s trying very hard not to pay attention to.]

So, how about someone tells me who’s responsible for this so I can get to tearing their throat out?
